Named in 1881 by Des Cloizeaux in honour of the Italian mining engineer Giovanni Battista (Jean-Baptiste) SERPIERI, who founded with others the Franco-Italian company « Roux-Serpieri-Fraissinet ».
Later, it became the « Compagnie Française des Mines du Lavrion » (CFML).
